Another factor that played a huge role in ending slavery in the North was the fear of job competition by many lower class people living in the North. Because the North lacked the climate to maintain a plantation economy like the South did, slaves in the North had different jobs to fill. Often times slaves in the North were highly specialized to certain jobs such as cooks, housemaids, lumberjacks and bakers. Many lower class members in the North were threatened by the slave labor and feared that the slaves would take away their jobs. Members who felt this way petitioned heavily to get rid of slavery in the North, not because of moral opposition to slavery, but rather out of fear of job competition.
